Sean commented later that we had dressed Rafe in his English soccer outfit this day so he actually represented the enemy at the many sites we visited. Fortunately no one threw stones or anything.

Liberty Bell
Of course we had to visit the Liberty Bell while we were in Philadelphia. The inscription on the bell that refers to liberty (Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof) was taken from a Bible verse in the chapter of Leviticus. Evidently the bell was associated with two big movements in U.S. History. The first was as a symbol of religious and political liberty for all as we declared our independence from Great Britain. The second was a few decades later when abolitionists objecting to slavery used the liberty inscription on the bell to argue for liberty for all men in the U.S. regardless of race (sorry, ladies, liberty for women wasn't on the table yet).
